2020
Aerial measurements using unoccupied aerial systems (UAS) transform our ability to measure and monitor volcanic plumes.
An Overview of Geophysical Techniques and Their Potential Suitability for Archaeological Studies
2023
The need to study, protect, and conserve archaeological heritage has enhanced the application of geophysical techniques as non-invasive and reliable tools to investigate fragile and valuable assets. This review presents the most popular geophysical techniques suitable for archaeogeophysical investigations, namely, magnetometry, ground penetrating radar, and electrical resistivity tomography, together with a series of multiparametric measures taken from aerial platforms (UAS). For each method, we recall the basic physical principles, illustrate the operative procedures for field investigation, and provide indications about data processing and modeling. We propose a flowchart to address relia…
Gain scheduling automatic landing system by modeling Ground Effect
2014
Taking ground effect into account a longitudinal automatic landing system is designed. Such a system will be tested and implemented on board by using the Preceptor N3 Ultrapup aircraft which is used as technological demonstrator of new control navigation and guidance algorithms in the context of the “Research Project of National Interest” (PRIN 2008) by the Universities of Bologna, Palermo, Ferrara and the Second University of Naples. A general mathematical model of the studied aircraft has been built to obtain non–linear analytical equations for aerodynamic coefficients both Out of Ground Effect and In Ground Effect. To cope with the strong variations of aerodynamic coefficients In Ground …
Automatic Landing System for Civil Unmanned Aerial System
2013
In spite of a number of potentially valuable civil UAS applications The International Regulations prohibit UAS from operating in the National Air Space. Maybe the primary reasons are safety concerns. In fact their ability to respond to emergent situations involving the loss of contact between the aircraft and the ground station poses a serious problem. Therefore, to an efficient safe insertion of UAS in the Civil Air Transport System one important element is their ability to perform automatic landing afterwards the failure. Moreover, the mathematical model of ground effect is usually neither included in the model of the aircraft during takeoff and landing nor in the design requirements of t…
Mathematical Model of Unmanned Aircraft In Ground Effect for Optimal Collision Avoidance
2011
The fundamental aim of the present paper is to model the aerodynamic characteristics of an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle(UAV) flying in ground effect. The second aim is to determine the relationship between the optimal avoidance maneuver and the control to execute it. In fact, this relationship is basilar to the development of a guidance scheme capable of approximating the optimal trajectory in real time. In the first part of this work ,a non-linear model is built in order to model the aerodynamic characteristics of an UAV flying In Ground Effect. To use a single model in the whole range of flying altitude, aerodynamic coefficients are modeled by means of hyperbolic equations. In particular, thes…
A geostatistical approach to map near-surface soil moisture through hyperspatial resolution thermal inertia.
2021
Thermal inertia has been applied to map soil water content exploiting remote sensing data in the short and long wave regions of the electromagnetic spectrum. Over the last years, optical and thermal cameras were sufficiently miniaturized to be loaded onboard of unmanned aerial systems (UASs), which provide unprecedented potentials to derive hyperspatial resolution thermal inertia for soil water content mapping. In this study, we apply a simplification of thermal inertia, the apparent thermal inertia (ATI), over pixels where underlying thermal inertia hypotheses are fulfilled (unshaded bare soil). Then, a kriging algorithm is used to spatialize the ATI to get a soil water content map. The pr…
Protocols for UAS-based observation
2023
In Chapter 1 the terms and the characteristics of an unmanned spatial data collection system were defined along with the fields of application, advantages, and disadvantages of different solutions and sensors. This chapter will present an overview of existing protocols and broad guidelines on environmental unmanned aerial system (UAS)-based monitoring, including study design with the general and possible use of the platform and sensor/camera settings, comprising quality assurance (QA) with all necessary steps (i.e., georeferencing, radiometric calibration for optical and thermal sensors, programming the flight mission, and data processing) to fulfill a complete survey mission for a given en…
Diagnostic Multidisciplinary Investigations for Cultural Heritage at Etna Volcano: A Case Study from the 1669 Eruption in the Mother Church at the Ol…
2022
Misterbianco is located on the southern flank of Mt. Etna (Unesco site), in eastern Sicily (Italy). This site, also known as Monasterium Album, has a long and tormented history linked with volcanic activity of Mt. Etna and regional seismicity. This site received much attention in the 2000s when excavation works brought to light a 14th century church remains below the thick layer of the 1669 lava. This study documents the first diagnostic multidisciplinary survey performed at this site 350 years after the eruption: the investigations were performed by using techniques such as ground-penetrating radar, infrared thermography, a terrestrial laser scanner and a drone survey to analyze the site’s…
Flight Control Research Laboratory Unmanned Aerial System flying in turbulent air: an algorithm for parameter identification from flight data
2013
This work addresses the identification of the dynamics of the research aircraft FCRL (Flight Control Research Laboratory) used for the Italian National Research Project PRIN2008 accounting for atmospheric turbulence. The subject vehicle is an unpressurized 2 seats, 427 kg maximum take of weight aircraft. It features a non retractable, tailwheel, landing gear and a powerplant made up of reciprocating engine capable of developing 60 HP, with a 60 inches diameter, two bladed, fixed pitch., tractor propeller. The aircraft stall speed is 41.6 kts, therefore it is capable of speeds up to about 115 kts (Sea level) and it will be cleared for altitudes up to 10.000 ft. The studied aircraft is equipp…
